Nail Polish in a Down Economy

Some time ago, I wrote about the "Lipstick Index," the increase of lipstick sales during bad economic times.  Well, it seems that in the most current economic downturn, lipstick is no longer a sure bet.  We now have the "Nailpolish Index."

People cut back on discretionary purchasing during bad times.  Lipstick and lip gloss sales were down 5.3% last year.  But nail polish went up 14.3%.

Wonder why nails are now more important than lips.  Could it be that nail polish cost less than lipstick?  Did people give up their professional manicures and pedicures and were doing their own?  Any thoughts?  Did you make changes with your beauty product purchases during this down economy?
